한국과 세계라는 두 단어가 의미하는 지역적, 문화적 차이는 엄청나다. 이 책은 이 두 개념 간의 교량을 설정하여 한국의 인식적 위치를 세계 속에서 찾아보려는 노력을 담고 있다. 여기에서의 노력이란 역사를 정체성으로 규정하고 한국의 역사적 정체성을 세계 여러 나라의 유사성과 비교함으로써 한국의 특성을 발견하려는 것이다. 우리의 정체성을 규명하는 것은 다른 나라와 비교함으로써 가능하다. 따라서 여러 나라의 역사적 유사성을 제시하여 결과적으로 우리 역사를 객관적으로 이해하고 또한 비교의 대상이 되는 외국 역사를 포함하여 세계와 세계 속의 한국의 이해의 지평을 넓히고자 한 것이 이 책의 특징이다. 

Having graduated from the University of Massachusetts Graduate School with major in education and psychology, Prof. Hong served for Korea Educational Development Institute as senior researcher and Korea Research Foundation as Director General. He has been involved in research projects which were jointly performed with foreign scholars. The most noticeable works, among others, werethe Asian Progamme of Educational Innovations in Developing Countries under the aegis of Unesco and the promotion of Korean studies at overseas institutes of higher education and research. Since retirement in 1998 from KRF, he has relished the rare status of visiting professor offered by Hankuk University of Foreign Studies to teach "Korea and the World" (the undergraduate level) and "The Identity of Koreans" (for graduate students),. Apart fom HUFS, Hanyang University and Korea University offered the stage for his teaching the aforesaid themes. His scholarly works at home were peppered by overseas teaching at Hamburge University, Germamy, and Stockholm University, Sweden. "Korea and the World" to be published is the result of his teaching at home and abroad.
